Everyday calculations, done right
Cooount brings together free calculators for the sums that come up every day: a percentage, a sale price, the VAT on an invoice, a loan payment, a tip split between friends, a salary after tax. Each one fits on a single screen. You type your numbers in a short sentence, and the answer appears straight away in large type, with the formula underneath so you can see how it was worked out. There is no account to create and nothing to install, on a phone or a computer.
Four families of calculators
- Percentages. The percentage calculator covers the five usual questions (a percentage of a number, what percent one number is of another, a percentage change, adding or taking off a percentage, the value before a rise or a fall). The discount calculator handles sale prices and stacked discounts.
- Prices and money. Add or remove VAT, GST or HST with the VAT calculator, set a price with the margin and markup calculator, work out a mortgage or car loan payment, see what savings could grow to with compound interest, compare two pack sizes by unit price and split a bill with the tip calculator.
- Pay and work. Estimate your monthly take-home pay in the UK after Income Tax, National Insurance, student loan and pension with the UK take-home pay calculator, or turn an hourly wage into a yearly salary and back.
- Everyday. Solve a proportion (if 4 gives 10, what does 6 give?), work out a simple or weighted average for grades, and count the words and characters of a text with the word counter.
Live results, no Calculate button
Every calculator works the same way. The sentence at the top holds the boxes you type in and the choices you tap to change (“plus” becomes “minus”, “a year” becomes “a month”). The result updates with each keystroke. Copy result, or the space bar, copies it; Reset, or the R key, brings back the starting values. Some calculators add a Details sheet: a repayment schedule for a loan, a year-by-year table for savings, a line-by-line breakdown of your pay. Currency, in the bottom bar, switches between dollars, pounds, euros and other symbols, and your choice follows you across the site.
A few extras make the calculators quicker to use. Tap the microphone at the top and say “20% of 85” or “tip 15% on 80”. Type a phrase such as “20% of 85” in the search box above and the right tool opens with your numbers in place. Share gives an image of your result and a link that reopens the same calculation. And while you are here, the quick-fire quiz at the top tests your mental arithmetic with percentages.
Your numbers stay with you
The calculations happen in your browser. The numbers you type, your currency, the page color and the text in the word counter are kept in your browser’s storage, on your own device, so they are still there next time. They are not sent to our server. Numbers only leave your device if you choose to share a link: the link carries the numbers of that calculation, never the text of the word counter. If you use the microphone, your browser handles the speech recognition and may send the audio to its provider.
Rates you can check
Two calculators depend on the law: VAT and UK take-home pay. Their rates come from official sources, such as GOV.UK and each country’s tax authority, and each page shows, under the result, the date of the rates and the source. Further down, a Sources and updates block lists every link. We check these rates whenever an official change is announced, and at least once a quarter. Results are estimates for everyday use, not tax or financial advice.
On your own website
Every calculator can go on another site: a blog, a school page, a shop’s help page or a Notion workspace. The widget maker gives you the code to paste, in three sizes and in the color you choose. The widget has no ads and no tracking.
Free, funded by advertising
Cooount is free and will be funded by advertising. Every calculator and every option is open to everyone, with nothing to buy and no sign-up. The site exists in English, French, Spanish, German, Italian and Brazilian Portuguese, each version written for its own readers, with its own examples, currencies and rates. Use the language menu at the top to switch.
